The Sound Of Music West Hollywood Theatre reviews
The Sound of Music lives on...
Seeing this beloved story on stage was a true delight! I have loved the movie for as long as I can remember, but in many ways this was even better. I have to say that Captain Von Trapp stole the show for me with his awesome vocals and sensitive balance between the military/Austrian patriot side of his character and the joy of a man rediscovering love and the joy of music. Maria brought an exuberance and innocence to her role along with a gorgeous voice. The children also shone in this production and their harmonies were amazingly beautiful (not to mention that each solo was adorable). The nuns chorus thrilled with beautiful a capella anthems, Uncle Max was as self absorbed and charming as ever, the Baroness elegant and materialistic, and Rolf a young man caught in a changing world. The entire cast did an incredible job of transporting the audience to another time and place...learning Do-Re-Mi, Climbing Every Mountain, bouncing on the bed to the Lonely Goatherd, and adding this play to everyone's list of My Favorite Things!
This play was well done and there were some interesting stage elements, however the story was very different than the movie. I didn't care for the extra songs that were put in and I was disappointed in the way some of the other songs were interjected in the wrong part of the story. Overall, not a good representation of the movie. The characters were not well casted. Much different than the movie. If you are a true Sound of Music movie fan, I would not recommend this musical. Oh and why did they keep referring to the one boy as Cort? I thought his name was Kurt!
